In-text citation examples

Parenthetical and narrative in-text citations are how readers jump from your sentence to the bibliography. Match the style your course requires, then keep the reference list consistent in the Citation Pack builder.

Student templates: Examples below are simplified. Always follow your instructor’s edition notes (APA 7, MLA 9, local Harvard variants).

APA in-text

Classroom citation practice improves revision speed (Lopez & Patel, 2021).

MLA / US Works Cited in-text

Feminist affect theory reshapes institutional critique (Ahmed 42).

GB Harvard in-text

How to keep in-text and list aligned

  1. Decide the style first (APA, US Works Cited, or GB Harvard).
  2. Add the full source in the builder, including DOI or URL when required.
  3. Copy the formatted reference list, then write matching in-text cues in your essay.
  4. Sort A–Z before submission so every cue resolves to one list entry.

FAQ

Do I need a page number in every in-text citation?

For direct quotations, yes in APA, MLA, and most Harvard guides. For paraphrases, APA often encourages a page or paragraph locator when helpful; MLA typically wants a location when one exists.

What if two sources share an author and year?

APA and Harvard usually add letters (2017a, 2017b). MLA relies on title cues when authors match. Label consistently in both the in-text citation and the list.

Can Citation Pack insert in-text citations into my essay?

No. The tool formats bibliography / reference lines. You type in-text citations in your document to match those lines.
